We continue the series of articles dedicated to the information on Law no. 190/2018 on the application of Regulation 679/2016 (GDPR) in Romania, which entered into force in July 2018. This law completes the GDPR Regulation and it generates some new obligations for Romanian legal entities.

The law introduces a new notion of „national identification number”.

National identification number

Law no. 190/2018 on the application of Regulation 679/2016 (GDPR) in Romania defines the new concept of “national identification number” as the number by which a natural person is identified in certain records systems and which has general applicability, such as:

  • social security number
  • ID series and number
  • passport number
  • driving license number
  • number of health social insurance.

Therefore, according to Law no. 190/2018 on the application of Regulation 679/2016 (GDPR) in Romania, almost any number that helps in the official identification of a natural person is a national identification number (hereinafter referred to as „NIN“).
